The iPhone's cellular capabilities will look conservative by the time it goes on sale in mid-2007. But the device's real strengths are its user interface, design and branding. Other phone makers should take note. Media Companies Must Make Content Available for Apple iPhone by McGuire, Mike; Baker, Van L. Apple's new iPhone is destined to become the premier device for people who gather digital content from a variety of sources. Media companies should make sure their content is available to such people. Forecast: Connectivity - Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and WiMAX-Enabled Phones, Worldwide, 2004-2010 by Milanesi, Carolina Bluetooth is increasingly available on handsets, but Wi-Fi and WiMAX will remain niche technologies. Sales of Bluetooth phones will hit 1 billion in 2010, with Wi-Fi and WiMAX peaking at 362 million and 27 million respectively. Vista Enhances Mobility, but Not Enough to Justify Rushing Your Migration by Kleynhans, Stephen; Fiering, Leslie Windows Vista's mobility features are useful; however, unless your organization has a compelling business need, they don't justify an accelerated migration of notebook users. Processor Makers Will Proliferate Cores to Increase Performance, Software Becomes Big Challenge by Claunch, Carl Chip makers will double cores every generation as their main means of performance enhancement. "Commercial Open Source: Is All That Glitters Usually Sold?" by Brian Prentice.
Commercial open-source software will have a significant impact on the software industry, but users might not reap the benefits. "The Importance of Integrated Business and Technology Decision Making Will Grow by 2012" by John Mahoney. Decisions that shape the direction and success of the enterprise require people with understanding of both business and technology. The number of strategic decisions made without an integrated understanding of business and technology will halve by 2012. "Results of IT Strategy Self-Assessment Survey" by John P. Roberts. As part of a Gartner IT management seminar, IT managers were asked to complete an assessment of the state of their IT strategy. The weakest areas identified were information management, internal IT processes and IT scorecards. |
